Last year we basically covered our bases for all the most well known "birthday" themed slasher films. Now, this year, I find myself having to get a little more creative with what movies can be included in the "birthday" theme.
So this week we are taking a look at the strange rock and roll themed slasher follow up to Slumber Party Massacre. Slumber Party Massacre 2 isn't inherently a birthday centered movie.
It does however, take place during the main character's birthday. And it does have a slumber party that revolves partially around her birthday. A lonely house in the middle of nowhere sets the stage for an enjoyable, if even a little weird, slasher movie.
On top of it all Courtney has been having nightmares about the original killings she experienced the few years earlier. And her dreams seem to becoming more and more real as time goes on.
However, Courtney's friends--all of whom are in a band together--intend to take Courtney to a new condo in the middle of the California desert for the weekend as a way to celebrate her birthday. Courtney hopes the trip will help her get over her nightmares.
Unfortunately, a weekend that starts out fun turns dark when Courtney begins to question her own sanity. It seems like her dreams are starting to come true and the driller killer is coming back as a personification of her worst nightmares.
Slumber Party Massacre 2 abandons many of the ideas and themes of the original film and replaces them instead with a enjoyable fever dream that is drenched in 1980s culture.
The story in this film seems basically non-existent. And character development is little to none. However, the strange visual, the musical numbers, and the mixture of dreams and reality give this movie a vibe similar to some of the later Nightmare on Elm Street films.
The main character is more of a dream character who is created by psychological distress and fear. And when he is fully realized he comes into reality to exact his bloody desires on the group of teens.
While it makes the film feel off-the-wall at times it ultimately pays off as a strange yet enjoyable sequel.
