My Bloody Valentine is 1981 horror film that jumped on the bandwagon during the height of the 1970-1980 slasher hype. It is considered one of many Halloween copy cats. When the film was originally released the MPAA forced the film-makers to make some significant edits to the movie. They removed most of the moments of violence during the death scenes throughout the film. Even after the first round of cuts the film still received an X rating. So after a second round of cuts the film was finally given an R rating.
So, my wife and I watched the DVD release that we own from Paramount Pictures. Paramount refused to release the version of the film with the uncut footage. So my DVD is the censored version, which is better for my sweet wife. I on the other hand went and watched all the uncut clips online after we finished the films. The uncut version is available on DVD from Lionsgate Entertainment who also released the 2009 remake.
Now, the film itself--cut or uncut--has a rather strained and contrived plot line. I enjoyed many of the characters as well as the suspense the film had. The climax of the movie with the chase scene in the mine is very exciting and well filmed. However, the reveal for the character seems unmerited. The filmmakers made no attempt to hint at who the murderer was or why they would want to murder people in the town. They give a shoddy last minute flash back that is supposed to magically explain why this character, who was seemingly sane the entire movie, is suddenly a raving psychopath.
Then after the disappointing reveal at the end we are forced to listen to "The ballad of Harry Warden" a cheesy folk song without any chorus.
