Of course, we will always have the tried and true classics such as Black Christmas and Gremlins. And then there are the newer gems such as Dismembering Christmas.
However, there are a few old Christmas slasher movies we mostly want to forget. Namely, the entire Silent Night, Deadly Night slasher film series.
Okay, okay, so the first one in the series was a decent holiday slasher film. I even gave it five out of five stars in my review last Christmas. It was a good example of exploitation meets the holidays. It also had some well done undertones of commentary on the Christmas holiday culture. It is no Black Christmas but a good movie all the same.
The sequel, Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 , is a completely different story.
Ricky recounts the horrible events from the first film and how they effected him and his life. Ricky then goes into detail about how, after that fated Christmas so many years prior, that he slowly went into a spiral of madness.
It turns out that Ricky began killing people secretly at a very young age and was never caught. It wasn't until he finally snapped and went on a total rampage in a quiet suburban neighborhood did the bring him in.
Finally, at the end of the film, Ricky escapes the mental hospital and dons the Santa Suit for the first and last time. He goes out into the night for one last killing.
The first forty minutes of the film are filled with straight stock footage from the original film, showing every single kill from the original Santa killer. For those of us who have seen the first film this quickly becomes tedious. If we wanted to watch Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 1 we would have turned on that movie instead! We don't need a play by play recap of every scene from the first film! Get on with the new story! The new killings!
Anyways, finally after sitting through the unnecessary recap, we finally get to hear more about Ricky and his own killings. Unfortunately, in none of the killings except for the final scene does he ever even wear the Santa suit! And in no way is there a hint of Christmas in this part of the movie. Wasn't that the point of the first film? A killer Santa.
Needless to say, the film falls pretty flat. The only thing that makes the film somewhat enjoyable is the actor who plays Ricky. He is goofy, cheesy, over-the-top and it is great. Every scene where he is acting crazy is hilarious to watch. When he goes on his first major rampage it is quite the experience. And the classic "Garbage Day" scene makes up a little bit for the rest of the film's atrocities.
