And now we have one more review for you!
This week we are reviewing the cult slasher classic The Slumber Party Massacre! The Slumber Party Massacre is a film that has earned its cult status due to its sexual tones, its thick atmosphere, and, of course, its gory kills. However, another large reason for this films popularity is that it written, directed, and staring women. Some film critics go so far as to call The Slumber Party Massacre a feminist film.
That little fact may or may not be true. (I'm going to go with it isn't true, even though the original draft of the script was written by a feminist activist Rita Mae Brown). Instead, I see this as a film that was made by a group of talented artists--be they women or not--who were simply trying to break into the movie business at the time of the film's release.
When news comes over the radio that there is an escaped killer in the area the girls originally pay it no mind. That is, until they find their pizza delivery boy dead on their doorstep.
The rest of the night is spent barricading themselves into the house, hoping to survive the killers onslaught. But, as fate would have it in a slasher movie, the killer manages to pick the girls off one by one until only a few remain to take a stand against the drill wielding maniac.
However, the longer I've pondered on the film and gone back to it the more I realize its brilliance. The subtle humor, the goofy kills, the excellent ambiance, the strong cast of female characters, all come together to create an excellent combination of horror.
The Slumber Party massacre does everything right as far as a slasher movie goes. It has nudity, a crazed killer, fun kill scenes, and a final girl (girls, plural, in this case. But the movie is also so much more than those elements alone. It has a charm and realism that is often missed in other films. Slumber Party Massacre helped spawn a whole series of movies and clones in a similar vein. In other words, its a classic.
