If you've been on the website before you may already know that we are big fans of B-horror flicks, particularly from Roger Corman's collection as well as from Full Moon Features. Today we are taking a look at a grindhouse classic from Full Moon Features titled Creepozoids!
Creepozoids is one of sci-fi horror movie that falls into the camp of an Alien clone. It takes elements and ideas that were potentially first introduced in the box office success Alien in then takes its own original, and in my opinion quite fun, twist on the subject matter.
Alien may be one of my favorite movies, but I often enjoy these b-horror copycats even more. While Alien is a movie with a slow burn and some truly well scripted, well filmed tense moments, the copycat movies are fast paced, fun, and pure gritty entertainment that truly packs a punch. Creepozoids is no exception.
The group begins to think that they have found a safe haven. The bunker is well protected, fairly isolated, and completely stocked with food. It seems like it is too good to be true, and it is.
It turns out that the bunker was home to some seriously dangerous experiments, experiments that turned one of the scientists into a crazed creature bent on pushing its own strange agenda.
As the men and women are slowly infected by the creatures mutation inducing venom they try to find a way to kill the creature and survive inside the bunker while the acid rain storm rages outside.
The special effects are fairly good for a film of this caliber. The gore and deaths were gruesome, goofy, and fun. The mutated monsters in this movie were exactly what you could want.
As to be expected, the acting wasn't the finest I'd seen. Particularly the male characters seemed pretty robotic in their performance. The women were more convincing and were the most likable of the group. One of the best actors in the film is one of the earliest to die, which is unfortunate.
The plot line itself was very enjoyable and simple, even if it had some holes in it. The science of the alien creature wasn't very well constructed or explained, thus making the final scene somewhat of a surprise since there was no lead up to or explanation for why the final "mutation" happened. But, as a lover of B-horror you learn to forgive these types of nuance.
The main qualm I had with Creepozoids was the final fight. Not only was the final mutation/birth unexpected and unexplained, but the scene dragged on. The monster would throw the final survivor over and over again, then proceed to stalk around the room like it forgot where it was. The scene just kept going, and once you thought it was over, it wasn't.
