Basically, if a blog wins this award they are required to pick eleven other lesser known blogs out there in the immense web to nominate and give the award to! The winner also links back to the person who nominated them. It helps other blogs get publicity and renown as well as helping the original winner who made the nominations. Additionally, winners are to answer eleven questions and share a little information about themselves. It seems eleven is a magical number, but I'm not sure why.
The Questions:
1. What angers you the most when watching a movie in theaters?
I have to definitely say parents who bring their children to movies that children have no business seeing! It's bad enough when it is an accident, like when that movie theater in Long Island accidently screened The Hills Have Eyes 2 instead of The Last Mimzy! Yep, that happened. I also heard that the same thing happened with Saw 3D accidently replacing Megamind.
However, it is even worse when parents consciously bring their children--babies even!--into movies that are obviously intended for adults. Without a doubt the kids will start screaming, or crying, or having a panic attack when a scary/intense/violent scene comes on the screen. Look guys, I know you want to see this movie, but get a babysitter for crying out loud! This movie is rated R!
2. What do you love about watching movies in theaters?
I don't often get to go to the movies and the small religious community that I currently live in usually doesn't end up showing any horror films in their theaters. But when I do get to go to the movies I always want it to be a specific film. Going to the movies is an experience--especially for horror films. With booming surround sound, a dark theater, and an encompassing large screen the audience is drawn into the film and can literally feel the terror along with the actors.
It is always fun to hear all the different reactions from audience members as frightening things happen on the screen. I will never forget the time that I first sat through a preview for The Others in the theater when I was still a kid. (I have no idea why they were showing an ad for that film at a kids movie) It was so big and loud and I couldn't cover my face or escape it. It was right there. I was amazed at the kind of effect just the trailer had on me. I knew then that some horror films were meant to be experience on the big screen.
3. Name a movie you never want to watch. Ever.
Cannibal Holocaust!
As a horror movie buff I'm probably getting all kinds of hateful stares right now. But something about that film just seems too much for me. The director was arrested after the film came out because the government thought it was a snuff film! A snuff film! Now obviously we know that is not the case, but I think that says something about the content of the film.
I would rather watch I Spit on Your Grave than Cannibal Holocaust. And I think even that is pushing it. I watched the Cinema Snob's review of the movie and that is enough for me, thanks.
4. Name a movie you're ashamed you haven't seen yet.
Another chance to get some angry stares from horror fans, but I have not yet seen Evil Dead 2 all the way through. I'm ashamed of that since both the original film as well as the reboot are in my top ten favorite movies of all time.
It's as if the movie is cursed for me! Every time I try to watch it the DVD I got/borrowed is too scratched, the internet during the streaming refuses to work, some other life issue comes up that interrupts the film. It's a travesty, I know. But one of these days I will break the curse and watch Evil Dead 2 in its fullness!
5. Favorite weekend hangout?
A strange and random question indeed. But, I am a introvert who usually spends his weekends . . . at home. I'm so boring, I know. However, I will often hold game night at my house on the weekend. Usually we play Dungeons and Dragons but I much prefer World of Darkness (for obvious reasons). It is my favorite game of all time.
6. Favorite band or music artist for the past week?
I usually don't listen to much mainstream music. Mostly I listen to soundtracks, usually from horror films or fantasy videos games. My recent favorite has been the original Friday the 13th soundtrack.
3D film, to me, is like one of those strange and exciting staples from the 80s. Teenagers went to the drive-in to see horror movies and cuddle up with the special someone. We also went to 3D horror films hoping to be scared out of our wits. So overall, Yay for the nostalgia factor. But new 3D seems kind of silly to me. I've only seen one movie in 3D and it just didn't seem that impressive to me.
8. Name a movie you wish you could have been on the set while it was filming.
That's easy. Any of the Friday the 13th movies that take place at a camp site, even the newest movie from 2009. I just love the camp setting for a horror film. It is very likely one of my favorite locations for horror movies. When I was a kid I used to love camping. But once night began to fall and I knew we were all alone in the woods . . . I just knew I was going to die. There was one time I almost peed my pants in my sleeping bag because I was too afraid to go out to the dark woods to take a piss.
I also think that being able to be a part of filming, seeing the bloody special effects in person, watching the scenes where girls are running through the woods would just be totally fun. One day maybe I'll write and direct my own camp site horror film and then can fulfill my dream.
9. How do you stream movies (Computer, Blu-ray Player, Game Consoles like PS4 and Wii)?
Usually I stream movies on my tablet but sometimes on my PS3.
10. What are your top five favorite movie podcasts to listen to?
I often don't listen to podcasts. Mostly because I don't have a lot of time to spare between classes and work. But I do occasionally like listening to "Welcome to Night Vale." I also really liked "Dreadtime Stories" by Fangoria when they were on. In fact, any horror themed radio dramas I'm usually down to listening to, old or new. I usually will listen to them at work.
11. Who is your movie celebrity crush? You have to answer for both guys and girls.
Oh boy, who to choose.
For the girl crush I'll say Kate Beckinsale. I've just always enjoyed her since I saw her in Underworld in high school. She was dark, she was beautiful, she kicked ass, and she didn't take any crap form anyone! I think Milla Jovovich from Resident Evil comes in a close second.
For a guy crush (something my wife calls a broner) I would have to say Vincent Price. I realize he is old and dead but he was the king of creepy in his day. He also often had an awesome pencil mustache that made him look rather dapper.
And Finally!
My Nominations: I tried to pick mostly new members of the HBA so that some really fresh talent can get some recognition.
