Night of the Comet follows the story of two sisters, two of the only survivors of the apocalypse. Reggie, the older sister, begins the movie working at a movie theater. The whole city is in an uproar over a coming comet. The earth is supposed to pass through the tail of the comet thus producing a light show of amazing proportions. thousands of people stand on the streets to watch the comet.
Reggie misses the comet because she is having sex with her boyfriend in the projection booth of the theater. When she wakes up the next morning she is in for a surprise. Anyone who was standing outside got turned to dust. And anyone who was inside, but not protected by a steel covering, got turned into a half rotted zombie.
Reggie's boyfriend is beaten over the head with a wrench by a zombie and dies. Meanwhile, Reggie gets away on her boyfriend's motorcycle. She arrives home to find her sister Sam still alive. Sam spent the night in the lawn shed in order to hide from their overbearing step-mother.
The two girls set out to find other survivors and to figure out what happened. They soon meet up with a young man named Hector and the three of them have to work together to fight off the zombies as well as a strange underground government group.
Now, the thing about this type of movie is that you can't come in expecting a deep story-line, significant character development, or award winning acting. What makes these types of movies good is the fact that they are silly and cheesy. They capture a moment in time. And the story is just plain fun.
Night of the Comet delivers on all accounts in the B horror genre.
The story is silly and a bit over-the-top. The characters are lovable yet vain. The two female leads are strong willed and know how to take care of themselves. And the concept of valley girls being responsible to continue the human race is hilarious.
The only real downside I see to the movie is that it does move a little slow. The plot is somewhat disjointed and goes along at its own pace. However, this does allow for some interesting and exciting bits of random side story. Thankfully the pacing it isn't so slow that it takes away from the movie's overall charm.
