Leprechaun two begins 1000 years in the past on Saint Patrick's Day which also happens to be the leprechaun's birthday. It is on this birthday that he is allowed to find and marry a wife--obviously through trickery and deception. However, when the Leprechaun's marriage is foiled by his servant he must wait another thousand years before attempting to marry again.
Jump forward 1000 years to the present day (or to the 90s at least). Here we meet Cody and his girlfriend Bridgette. Cody, along with his uncle, run a shoddy tour around L.A. On the night of Saint Patrick's day Cody is scheduled to take Bridgette out on a date. But his plans fall through when he has to run the tour that night instead. Bridgette is angry and goes home. when Cody comes by later that night to apologize the Leprechaun has shown up at Bridgette's house. The Leprechaun kidnaps Bridgette but accidentally leaves one of his gold coins behind. Therefore Cody is left to save his girlfriend in a overtly cliche and overused plot line.
Cody decides to use the coin as leverage to find Bridgette. However, the Leprechaun kills many people along his way to get his coin back and Cody becomes the prime suspect for the murders. However, Cody does not give up. Eventually he finds the Leprechaun's lair and sneaks in. Then the battle ensues to get Bridgette back from the creepy little Irish freak.
The first kill was pretty well done, all be it dark (It involved a lawn mower to the face) and made me think the film overall was going to be an interesting killing spree. But I was ultimately disappointed. The film seemed to really drag in the middle and I found myself somewhat bored and uninterested in what was happening. There was an occasional kill scene in between all the boredom but they were mostly just sick instead of inventive. This whole film in general had a more sinister and dark tone compared to the creepy whimsy of the previous film. This, in my opinion, was not a good thing.
So, already the film makers had made the poor decision of making the film darker as well as making the film boring. But by using the trite and lazy plot line of girl gets kidnapped and guy saves her was the biggest hit against the film. It isn't that Bridgette didn't do anything but lay there, she actually did a lot to help save herself. However, Bridgette seemed somewhat uninteresting and flat, not unlike most female characters in media today. I wish film makers would learn to write realistic female characters instead of just pumping out the same schlock.
Lastly, I mentioned in my previous review how the lore made little to no sense in the last movie. But in this movie the lore makes even less sense. There is some curse on bloodlines. The only thing that can kill the leprechaun is iron--not a four leaf clover. And the leprechaun freaking explodes at the end of the film for apparently no other reason than the excuse to throw leprechaun guts everywhere. The lore was confusing and pointless in this film.
