As I come to the review of this fifth--and not quite final--entry of the series we also come to the halfway point in our Puppet Master Marathon! It has been quite the ride so far with some fun entries and some not as fun. Overall, it has been a rather silly and B-rated experience.
The fifth Puppet Master is a straight continuation of the story from the previous film with Rick as the brand new Puppet Master. It is nice to see a direct sequel for once and not another strange spin-off story. I don't mind the spin-offs, but I like coming into the film and recognizing most of the human characters and also knowing where they are coming from.
In many ways this feels like just another rehashing of the previous story. The Demon Lord from Puppet Master IV is angry that his minions from before were killed and so he sends out one final puppet, the strongest puppet of them all, to kill everyone and take back the powers of hell. The Demon inhabits the doll himself and is more vicious than the previous batch combined. So, once again the psychic acts as a doorway into our world and once again warns Rick of the coming danger. The rest of the story pretty much follows suit of the rehashed story. The demon kills some people, the Puppets fight the demon off, whatever.
